Characteristics of A Great Auto Mechanic
Finding a great auto mechanic can be a difficult process (if you haven’t already found a detail oriented staff member wit true integrity, that is!). We understand that trusting a stranger with your truck or company fleet vehicle is no easy thing, and there’s a level of comfort and trust that you need to have with your mechanic in order to have a great working relationship.
There are some traits, though, that serve as a great indicator of a trustworthy, professional, and overall great auto mechanic. Here are four of them.
1. Safety First
A great mechanic puts safety first in the shop. They are aware of their surroundings, and take note of the protocol of every action to ensure the safety of the other staff and themselves. Rituals and routines are a solid must for a safe work ethic, especially amongst others around you in the shop.
2. GREAT COMMUNICATION SKILLS
If anything can strain a relationship – both personal and professional – it’s a lack of communication. Because working with large vehicles is a very technical job, a mechanic that doesn’t properly explain the issues that are happening with your truck, along with potential solutions, is going to have a hard time helping the customer understand what’s going on with their vehicle or rig. A great auto mechanic understands that there may be a technical gap, and works hard to make sure that the customer understands the issue clearly and is aware of all of the solutions before moving forward.
3. A PROBLEM SOLVER WITH A TECHNICAL APTITUDE
Often, issues that are happening under the hood aren’t totally obvious. This means that a great mechanic needs to be able to problem solve the issue based on the symptoms that a customer gives him. A solid problem solver who can use technical aptitude to quickly diagnose problems and find solutions is going to be able to work quickly and efficiently to get customers back on the road.
4. A WILLINGNESS TO KEEP LEARNING
With the fast pace of automotive technology, finding a mechanic who enjoys staying on top of the latest trends in automotive technology is a good sign that they are always learning new techniques and staying on top of any new changes in diagnostics and mechanical aspects of the field for relevance.
5. STRONG WORK ETHIC
It almost goes without saying that a strong work ethic is key in finding a great mechanic. A strong work ethic means that a mechanic is going to go above and beyond to make sure that the customer’s truck’s problems are taken care of. They’re going to check for any other possible issues that could prevent problems in the future and give the customer an honest assessment.
